PaperPort SE is a combination scanner interface and rudimentary document-management system, and Power PDF helps you create and edit, well, PDFs. Supported cloud sites are Google Drive, Dropbox, Evernote, and OneDrive. Also included is Nuance PaperPort SE with OCR, Power PDF, Brother's iPrint&Scan (for Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android), and Presto PageManager with OCR for Mac. In addition to the standard TWAIN and WIA scanner drivers for hooking into applications that support scanning directly into them, the software bundle includes the latest ICA drivers for Windows and SANE drivers for Mac. The maximum document size is 8.5 by 72 inches, and the minimum size is 2 by 3.4 inches, and the smallest and largest plastic card sizes you can scan are 2.05 and 3.4 inches square, respectively. Its maximum optical resolution is 600dpi, with an interpolated 1,200dpi. (Originally, the company dubbed this the U-Path Paper Feeding System, but I suspect that name conflicted with the similar U-Turn Scan feature on Fujitsu's recent Image Scanner fi-800r, a cross between a desktop and portable document scanner.)īrother rates the DS-740D's maximum duty cycle at 100 scans daily. If you're short on operating space, lifting the cover reduces the scanner's footprint by redirecting the output flow upward, a feature Brother calls Desk-Saving Design. The drawback here is that, unless your mobile device supports USB, you can't scan to it with this portable as you can with the DS-940DW and Epson DS-80W. On the left edge, you'll find a USB 3.0 Type-A port for connecting the scanner to a laptop or PC for data transfers and power. (Opens in a new window) Read Our Epson DS-70 Portable Document Scanner ReviewĪnother significant difference between the Brother scanners is that the DS-940DW sports a handy control panel for choosing various scanning and connection options, while the DS-740D comes with only a Start/Stop button for initiating and cancelling scans. Compact and Simpleīefore talking specifically about the DS-740D, it's important to note that there are two types of portable scanners: single-sheet or manual-feed models, like the two Brothers, that hold just one sheet at a time (and must therefore be fed by hand), and multipage sheet-fed portables with automatic document feeders (ADFs) like the Epson WorkForce ES-300W Portable Wireless Duplex Document Scanner, another PCMag top pick. Otherwise, the DS-740D is fast, accurate, and ideal for scanning to your laptop on the road. For its $50 savings over its fancier sibling, the DS-740D makes you give up a lot, including wireless and mobile connectivity, a built-in battery for use in the field, the ability to operate the scanner apart from a computer by saving your scans to a microSD card, and a few other features.
